ACTIVE SHOOTER

GENERAL INFORMATION

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF AN ACTIVE SHOOTER?

Law enforcement defines it as a situation where someone is actively killing or trying to kill random people in a confined or populated area. Active shooters typically aren’t trying to target a specific person, they are simply trying to inflict as much damage as possible to as many people as possible.

WHY ARE CHURCHES AND SCHOOLS TARGETED BY ACTIVE SHOOTERS?

Most shooters choose “soft targets.” A soft target is a place that has easy access, low levels of a security presence, lots of people, and multiple ingress and egress points. A soft target is a church, school, mall, movie theater or open access office. An example of a hard target would be a military base, airport terminal, or police station. An often overlooked characteristic of a soft target are people who are simply unaware of their surroundings. Think about the last time you went to the mall. If you look around most people are distracted in their phones and are completely unaware of their surroundings. Our training helps train people on how to become more alert and aware of your physical surroundings as well as the people who are in your vicinity.

ARE ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATIONS ON THE RISE?

Unfortunately, active shooter prevention is quickly becoming something that the general public needs to understand. According to the FBI, there have been approximately 250 active shooter tragedies between the year 2000 - 2017, which account for over 2,200 casualties. Of the approximately 2200 casualties, 729 of them occurred in 2017 alone. This means about 33% of all active shooter casualties occurred in 2017. About 25% of these incidents took place in either a school or a house of faith.
